The tale of Despereaux : being the story of a mouse, a princess, some soup, and a spool of thread / Kate DiCamillo

We waited a long time for this book to arrive, but I'm not sure I agree with all the fanfare surrounding it. The story telling was certainly unique, the plot creative and the character development strong, but we found it a bit too morose for our taste. As a family, we seem to prefer inspiring and uplifting stories, and this certainly didn't fit the bill. Still, it was interesting and well written.

The midwife's apprentice / Karen Cushman

I read this book to my children when they were 9, 8, 5 and 3. We all LOVED it. It's very well written, and the character development is captivating. We cared deeply about the heroine and wanted her to succeed wildly! The book also gave us a glimpse into medieval life, and it whet their appetite for a deeper study of this time period.

J.S., Ridgefield Park. 4/12/08

King's courage / Stacia Deutsch and Rhody Cohon

I read this book to my children (ages 10, 9, 6 and 4). Although it's a creative approach to teaching history and it definitely made Martin Luther King, Jr. more tangible for them, it's probably better that a child read it themselves. The writing doesn't flow well when it's read out loud. The plot was interesting but not captivating.

J.S., Ridgefield Park. 4/12/08

Doctor Dolittle's circus / Hugh Lofting

A marvelous continuation of the adventures of the famous doctor who talked to animals! Recommended by Jane Goodall, the expert on chimps--I could imagine her as a kid wanting to grow up to be Dr. Dolittle. Teaches kindness to animals (and humans) in a fun way.

P.A., Rutherford. 4/12/08

Pickup on South Street (DVD)

There's a muffin and a cannon and a stoolie; there's a dick who beats up people and a kindly FBI agent. It is a time when men on subways wore fedoras and women wore gloves and pearls. And the word "pickup" doesn't quite fit the story. And there are Commies.

The characters and the actors are GREAT. I will always think of Moe the stoolie when I hear the name Thelma Ritter, despite all her other movie and TV credits, and Richard Widmark's character is more droll and humorous than the other roles he's played.

Good isn't always good, and evil isn't always evil. But everyone HATES the Reds.

Among the hidden / Margaret Peterson Haddix

This is the first book of this AMAZING series. It is a truley amazing book. It captivates the governments powers and how people might use them. This book, once I started reading it I couldn't stop. It is a semi-easy book. Margaret Peterson Haddix is an amazing author and I will always continue to read her books. I have read only about 2 of them, both of which are in the "Shadow Children" series. They are books one and two which I wrote reviews about. READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

J., Paramus. 4/8/08

Among the impostors / Margaret Peterson Haddix

Among the Impostors is a brilliant thought out plot, great characters and is an excellent book to read. I was reading it and I didn't want to stop reading. It is that good of a book. I also don't really like reading that much. So I would recommend it to anyone!!!! READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They live by night and Side street (DVD)

Both films artistically fine - noir. In one, a bad kid tries to go good with the gal he loves only to be caught up in circumstances; in the other film (Side Street), a good guy does a bad thing for a good reason, tries to make it right, gets caught up in circumstances.

It would be great to watch the two-film set with someone to discuss good and evil complexities and what endings should be fair. It's a thinking person's set of films. And, ladies, they don't make 'em like Farley Granger anymore.

Twilight / Stephenie Meyer

AMAZING book! once you read this you'll be hooked!

M.M., Palisades Park. 3/31/08

Riding freedom / Pam Mun?oz Ryan

I think that Riding Freedom is a good book because it's half sad and half happy. Riding Freedom is a book about a girl named Charlotte who is an orphan that likes horses. Charlotte soon runs away and disguises herself as a boy to get a place to live because back then boys could do more things than girls. Charlotte meets a nice man named Ebenezer who lets her stay for a while at his stable.

M.C., Tenafly. 3/31/08

Riding freedom / Pam Mun?oz Ryan

I think that Riding Freedom is a wonderful book. Riding Freedom is both sad and happy. It is sad because in the beginning of the story Charlotte isn't aloud to be with the horses any more. (Charlotte loved the horses.) It is very happy because she doesn't get captured when she ran away from a orphanage. Pam Munoz did a lot of research about history. This book is based on a true story.

C.C., Tenafly. 3/31/08

Riding freedom / Pam Mun?oz Ryan

I think that Riding Freedom is half a sad book and half a happy book because when Charley (Charlotte) gets hit by the horse in her left eye it gets blind. That is one of the sad parts. When the new horses are born it is a happy part.

The Ruth Rendell mysteries : set 1 (DVD)

Excellent, especially if you enjoy British movies and mystery together.

Tornado / Betsy Byars

Tornado was a great book and it is about a boy named Pete and his dog, Tornado. It was about how he found Tornado. First a tornado hit their house and took their roof off and when the tornado was going on their granddad was working in the corn field at the end of the tornado they found out that he was ok and not hurt. Then they went looking around for damage but their roof. Then they found Tornado. And more.

D.L., Tenafly. 3/27/08

Tornado / Betsy Byars

Tornado was a great fictional book of a dog named Tornado. I liked its happy ending. I think Tornado was very talanted. This book was also very creative. Tornado should be a bestseller.

T.K., Tenafly. 3/27/08

Tornado / Betsy Byars

Dear friends, I think this book is very boring. It is horrible. It is so boring it stinks like a skunk.

S.P., Tenafly. 3/27/08

Tornado / Betsy Byars

Tornado is a great book because it has a great happy ending. This book everyone should try. This book can be true. There really could be a dog like Tornado. The stories in this book are funny and exciting truly I love both of those types of stories.

Silver / Gloria Whelan

I really like the book SILVER because it is really funny and really adventurous. Some parts can be a little sad. When Silver went missing I thought she would be gone forever! Rachel followed Silver's tracks and went to a cave where there were bones everywhere next to the cave where some wolf pups were. Then Rachel saw a wolf pup in back of where the cave was. It was as dead as a doornail. Rachel was pretty scared but then she peeked back in the cave and saw the biggest wolf in that cave. But there was also a brown and blue eye pup, it was Silver. Silver scared the wolf away and they brought Silver back to her house because Ruff, the mother of Silver, was whimpering. Then they followed the whimpering noise back to their warm and cozy house.

J.K., Tenafly. 3/26/08

Silver / Gloria Whelan

I read Silver with a school book club and everyone enjoyed Silver, especially me. It was exciting and adventurous. Rachel wanted the dog so her dad gave her the runt. My favorite part is when Rachel goes into the forest and finds the bones, dead wolf and 4 baby wolfs, then she finds her dog Silver. But first she almost gets bit by the biggest baby wolf out of the 4. Her dad was in the Iditarod and when he got home she told him her adventure. He said, "I can't believe how much he's grown since I was gone. He'll grow up to be a great lead dog."

S.S., Tenafly. 3/26/08

Silver / Gloria Whelan

I liked this book. I was a little scared when I read chapter 5 because I saw the word "White bones" in somewhere in chapter 5. But I enjoyed other chapters. I liked the part when the dog called Ruff is about getting pupies. And I liked the part when Rachel got a puppy when it was her birthday. I enjoyed reading this at Book Club at my class. My group enjoyed SILVER, too.

M.M., Tenafly. 3/26/08

Silver / Gloria Whelan

Silver was a great book. I liked it a lot. My favorite part was when Ruff had babies and Rachel's dad gives her Rachel, the main character, one of her puppies. Rachel takes really good care for Silver who is one of Ruff's puppies. But then one day Rachel was in a rush and then she was such in a rush that she forgot to close the shed. Then when Rachel hears big news that her dad got third place in the Iditarod Rachel rushes to get home. But she has to take the bus home and there so much traffic. When she got home she noticed Silver was not there and then she goes on a dangerous adventure just to save Silver. At the end everything turns out really, really great. And then when her dad comes home he thinks Rachel did a great job of taking care of Silver and he thinks just one day, just one very good day, Silver might get to be great good lead dog for the Iditarod.

Freckle juice / Judy Blume

Freckle Juice was a interesting book because I never heard of freckle juice before. It was weird when I heard about freckle juice. That was weird. There was also gross stuff in the book-the ingredient for freckle juice was gross. So when you see this author, Judy Blume, make sure it's not about freckles. No offense, Judy.

O.R., Tenafly. 3/26/08

Freckle juice / Judy Blume

Freckle Juice was a great book because it was funny when Andrew got a blue marker and made dots on his face.

The Canada geese quilt / Natalie Kinsey-Warnock

I really liked the Canada Geese Quilt. My favorite part was when the grandma and Ariel were talking in the hay. I also liked that the author wrote that Ariel felt like she was talking to a empty bed when the grandma was sick. It is a very good book. I think you should read it too.

K.F., Tenafly. 3/26/08

The Canada geese quilt / Natalie Kinsey-Warnock

The Canada Geese Quilt was a good book. My favorite part was when the mother told Ariel that she was going to have a baby. I also liked the part when Ariel said that she felt like she was talking to an empty bed. I really liked The Canada Geese Quilt and I think you should read it too. The book is by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock.

M.S., Tenafly. 3/26/08

The Canada geese quilt / Natalie Kinsey-Warnock

The Canada Geese Quilt is a good book, but not my favorite one. If you like sad and loving books the Canada Geese Quilt is for you. My favorite part of the book is when at dinner the mother told Ariel, the girl, that she was going to have a baby. Ariel felt startled and ran out of the house and climbed her favorite apple tree. After a while Ariel's grandma came out of the house to talk to Ariel they sat in the hay and talked. After the talk Ariel said, “I feel closer to Grandma now." You should try and read this book, but it's not for everyone. This book is by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock.

M.R., Tenafly. 3/26/08

The Canada geese quilt / Natalie Kinsey-Warnock

I really liked The Canada Geese Quilt because it is full of suprises. I will not tell you the end. You have to find out yourself!!! You should really read The Canada Geese Quilt.

Road warriors: the New York Giants incredible 2007 championship season / New York Post

The New York Giants gave a spectacular run to the championship. They really were motivated to beat those cheaters (PATRIOTS). So therefore this book shows many things about the New York Giants road to success.

D., Ridgewood. 3/26/08

The Canada geese quilt / Natalie Kinsey-Warnock

The Canada Geese Quilt is an interesting book. Although I did not think it was a great book, it was a good book to keep you thinking. If you like to think about your book and understand it well, you should read The Canada Geese Quilt.

Hatchet / Gary Paulsen

Hatchet is a suspenseful and spell-binding book. It is a wonderful survival guide. Take it with you when you go camping. Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson has to take all his strength and knowledge to be able to survive after the plane crash in the Canadian Wilderness. From the depths of the lake to the warmth of his home Brian awakened his senses to the world around him. This book might one day save a child's life who is stranded in the wilderness. Filled with danger and excitment who knows what will be behind trees or bushes perring out at you? Very suspenseful and intruging this book takes survival into another level. The writing in here is sophisticated and understandable. Recommended for all ages. Once you take a peak, it will be your most favorite book.

I have to commend Mr. Paulsen who took all his heart and soul into writing this minature survival guide. All the time he took into polising this book has made him famous worldwide. He has written four other survival books, all with Brian as the main charcter. My class 6-A is reading this book right now. Everybody loved it. Personally, I could not wait for the outcome of Brian. What will you do if you are stranded in the middle of the wilderness? Will you survive? Read this to find out.

Bungalow 2 / Danielle Steel

I thought this was a very good one, though the ending was terrible, but it was a true Steel book. Intresting and light.

This CD will blow your mind.

The mad Miss Manton (VHS)

Ooooh, what a sweetie. The cast members would become famous and stereotyped in roles other than the ones played in this movie. They are grand here.

There is a murder; there is a gang of debutantes running around NYC, each in a different fur coat and long gown each time on screen, and there are great lines, typical of the thinking of the time, that sound so other-worldly now.

Great fun. And rather mysterious too.

M.H., Fair Lawn. 3/21/08

Saint / Ted Dekker

Fast read. Ted Dekker at his best.

C.M., Hawthorne. 3/19/08

Superman : the dailies, strips 1-966, 1939-1942 / created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster

It is a great book. It really shows the history of the book. I enjoyed it and I hope you can too.

G.M., Fair Lawn. 3/19/08

Beautiful boy / David Sheff

This book was a heartfelt account of a father's journey through his son's addiction. I couldn't put it down. It was both compelling and repulsive at the same time.

T.J., Teaneck. 3/18/08

A great and terrible beauty / Libba Bray

This series is an extraordinary example of how a historical fiction book can not only treat you to a venture into the past, but make you wish you could have been there too. The book is the perfect combination of fantasy and history and the sequels are equally as entertaining. I highly recommend them!

C.V. 3/17/08

Dinky Hocker shoots smack / M.E. Kerr

Life of Pi / Yann Martel

The Life of Pi is a charming story about a multi-relgious boy named Pi. Pi loves animals and believes that animals are fine in zoos. One day Pi becomes shiprecked in the middle of an ocean with many animals on his boat. Soon there is only one left- a mighty preditor that could kill Pi! Will Pi survive? Will he ever see his home again? Read it to find out!

The darkest evening of the year / Dean Koontz

I must disagree with Publisher's weekly on their assessment of the narrator Kirsten Kairos. Kairos' differences of the characters feelings, beliefs, gender, ages, and afflictions came through triumphantly in my opinion. I do agree with the quality of the book and would recommend this to anyone who found themselves turned off by other Dean Koontz books.
